What You Need to Know

Before you order an ADVMotoGirl mask, there are some important caveats and other things to know. First and foremost:

THESE MASKS ARE NOT FOR MEDICAL USE!!

These masks are intended only as decorative face coverings and nothing more. There is absolutely no guarantee my masks will keep you from getting sick or prevent you from getting someone else sick.

The decision to use these masks is entirely your own.

Please remember that the use of face masks is not intended to replace other recommended measures to stop contagion spread, such as social distancing, washing your hands, and refraining from touching your face outside the home as much as possible.  Follow the latest advice of the CDC and health care professionals as to how best to keep yourself and others safe.

I am not a professional

Additionally, my seamstress skills are not awesome, so I am not charging for these masks. I ask only that you cover shipping if I need to mail them to you. Donations are appreciated, but by no means required. Donations in excess of $10 include free shipping or local (San Diego area) delivery. You can send donations via PayPal to airynd at gmail dot com.

Initially, I had no intention of making masks for anyone but one or two friends and myself, but I’m happy to make these; it’s one terribly small thing I can contribute to the community. However, I reserve the right to pause or stop production at any time, though I’ll always finish orders with accompanying donations.

Due to the newbie skill level, please be aware you may have the following comments/questions about your mask:

“That’s adorable! How old is the child who made it?” (Answer: ~2600 weeks old)

“Oh! That’s, um, interesting!”

“Is it supposed to look like that?”

The masks themselves

These masks will cover your nose and mouth, and are available in three sizes: Small/Child, Medium/Teen/Woman, and Large/Man. They’re curved outward around your face and there is a rise to cover the nose.

I’ll ship with the elastic untied, as there are two ways to wear the mask – with the elastic looping over each ear or behind the head. I prefer behind the head, as it’s more comfortable and doesn’t make my ears stick out, but it may be less convenient for some. Instruction will show how to do both methods.

Elastic is in very short supply! With everyone panic-buying masks and mask-making supplies, it’s difficult to find elastic right now. I have plenty of black elastic shock cord for the moment, but no flat, normal-person elastic. You can always swap elastic on your own at any time, it’s very easy and I’ll send along instructions how with your order.

These are double-layer fabric masks without a filter pouch. If you need a filter pouch, I’m not your gal.

I have cottons and flannels, and you can have any of the following combinations:

  • Cotton interior and exterior
  • Cotton exterior, flannel interior
  • Flannel interior and exterior
  • Flannel exterior, cotton interior

Flannel will be softer and more comfortable against your face. However, it also retains more moisture and may be slightly harder to breathe through due to the denser fabric. It will also be warmer, of course, and the denser fabric may offer some additional protection, but this is not proven or guaranteed.

The masks are made of four pieces; you can mix and match up to four different fabrics for each mask. Generally, people choose one for the exterior and one for the interior.

I recommend hand-washing these masks as needed and hanging dry. See above “I’m not a seamstress” comment.

Masks are made in a pet-free, non-smoking home. Fabrics are pre-washed with Seventh Generation non-toxic laundry soap and no fabric softener before being line-dried.

If you have any troubles with the masks, including ill fitment, having it fall apart after only a few uses, et cetera, please let me know and I’ll get you another one.

Many of the fabrics shown are limited editions and may run out. Should that happen before I process your order, I’ll let you know and we’ll coordinate selecting another fabric.
